Mongolism (Down's syndrome) is used as the paradigm for the changing patterns of management which are emerging for moderately mentally retarded persons without severe additional handicaps. Attainment possibilities have increased, and achievement is dependent on early detection, counselling of parents, home management, in so far as is practicable, adequate training and provision of facilities for community living and working. A total community programme is outlined to obtain these objectives.
