The blood films of 7,750 patients in a large general hospital were examined over a period of six months. In 393 cases platelet counts of less than 150,000/mm 3 were detected by routine laboratory methods. The patient and/or his hospital records were examined in each case to assess the primary cause for the reduced platelet count. The relative frequency of the conditions causing thrombocytopenia have been tabulated and are discussed.
