The antimicrobial activity of a novel drug combination, trimethoprim plus sulphamethoxazole, is examined at the microbiological level. A total of 108 patients received the combination: (i) Seventy‐three incidents of urinary tract Infection were studied, and 59 patients were cleared of their infecting organism. There were four outright failures and 11 cases of reinfection. (ii) Twenty‐six patients with respiratory tract infection were cleared of their original infecting organism, but three were reinfected with resistant organisms. (iii) Sixteen patients with wound infection were treated and all healed, but in one case no causative organism was found. (iv) Two cases of Gram‐negative septicæmia in conjunction with urinary tract infection occurred. One patient lived and one died, but in both cases the organisms were eradicated from the urine.
