Recent advances in the management of burns have included the development of effective topical antibacterial therapy, the use of viable cutaneous homografts in the preparation of the burn bed for grafting, and improvement in the nutrition of the burn patient. There has also been increased understanding of the problems of fluid and electrolyte balance, infection and immunity, and some of the specific complications of thermal Injury. Together with these developments, the importance of a trained team working within a specialized unit for the care of burns is emphasized.
