I suppose I am in the position of being the most ignorant person at this conference on the subject which will engage your attention this week—“The Emerging Needs of Children”. I find this no special handicap. Increasingly this is my situation as a full‐time Dean, becoming more and more remote from reality—further from medical practice, teaching and research, and increasingly ink‐stained. But as I have moved, with age and calling, into the serene heights where one knows less and less about more and more, there are advantages. No longer earthbound, one can perhaps see a bit further, although the focus may not be very sharp, and it becomes increasingly difficult to be shot down.
