This research was begun and carried out because the problem of drug dependence among young Australians was of comparatively recent origin. It was hoped that the collecting and coordinating of all the available and relevant officially known recorded data for New South Wales might assist governmental authorities in trying to control the rapid growth of the problem. It was also hoped that different approaches to the problem would be indicated, as the therapeutic procedures then in use had been based on those used with lack of success in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.
