In a 396‐bed general hospital, there were 5,100 admissions in one year. The bacteriology laboratory received 10,124 specimens and isolated pathogenic organisms from 1,038 patients. Investigations directed at tuberculosis were excluded from this survey. Of the organisms isolated, 43% caused urinary infections, 32% respiratory infections, and localized infections comprised 25%. This paper records the pattern of infections and of antibiotic sensitivities of these patients. An unexpected observation was the high proportion of Gram‐negative organisms isolated from sputum.
