The increased incidence of nephrotic syndrome in hyperendemic malarial areas in the tropics was found to be significantly related to Plasmodium malariæ: parasitæmia (quartan malaria) in Ugandan children. The clinical features of malarial nephrosis included gross œdema with ascites, heavy proteinuria (10–20 gm/day), hypoalbuminæmia (1 gm/100 ml) and hypercholesterolæmia (more than 400 mg/100 ml). In adults, chronic renal failure and hypertension (particularly in pregnancy) were commonly observed.
