The combined evolutionary advantages of genetic polymorphism and the development of internal fertilization and viviparity have provided a s/stem of reproduction in which immunological influences are pre‐eminent. This paper reviews the extent of these influences in the control of fertility in mammalian pregnancy, and examines their clinical implications for spontaneous and induced infertility in man.
