The autopsy findings from seven patients who died of primary pneumonia due to influenza A2/Hong Kong/68 are presented. The gross and microscopic appearances due to the pneumonia are described, as well as changes present in other tissues. No association with chronic rheumatic heart disease was found. Five of the seven patients were shown to be markedly hypoxic and the serum levels of three enzymes (SGOT, LDH and SAP) were elevated in all five. It is suggested that the serum enzyme elevations are a result of increased permeability of cell membranes caused by severe systemic hypoxia.
