Advances in intravenous and percutaneous cholangiography techniques are discussed together with their clinical indications and limitations. Percutaneous cholangiography is a valuable examination in the investigation of jaundice when the ætiology is indefinite. It confirms the site and extent of the obstruction. It demonstrates any abnormal anatomy of the biliary tree pre‐operatively, and so facilitates eventual surgical dissection. It may exclude obstructive jaundice, and so avoid laparotomy with its inherent risks for the jaundiced patient. In our hands we report, without mortality or major morbidity, an 80% to 90% correct cholangiographic assessment in a series of 43 patients.
