One hundred and sixty‐two patients suffering from bronchogenic carcinoma have undergone resection by the writer during the period 1956 to 1970 inclusive. Lobectomy and pneumonectomy were performed almost equally. The overall mortality rate was 8.5% (pneumonectomy 14.5%, lobectomy 4%). Squamous carcinoma occurred in 97 cases, undifferentiated carcinoma in 39 cases, adenocarcinoma in 19 cases, and alveolar‐cell carcinoma in seven cases. Of those who had a chance to survive for more than one year, 41.5% survived for five years and 28% survived for 10 years or more. It has not been possible to determine whether recurrent tumour was present at death in all cases, though one patient was shown to have a recurrence 10 years after operation.
