In 40 cases of leptospirosis, confirmed serologically by the sensitized erythrocyte lysis test, the ESR was found to be 100 mm or above in 23 patients (57·5%). The ESR was 60 mm or higher in one hour in 32 patients (90%), and was normal in two (5%). At the time of the ESR determination, the blood urea level was also estimated and was normal in 12 patients (30%). The ESR in leptospirosis is not related to the blood urea or serum bilirubin levels, but is apparently higher in those patients who have meningitis. It Is concluded that determining the ESR is a valuable diagnostic investigation in leptospirosis.
