At the Angau Memorial Hospital, Lae, New Guinea, a comparison was made between procaine penicillin aluminium monostearate and crystalline penicillin in the treatment of pneumonia in adults. Gram‐positive dipiococci were seen on the Gram stain of the initial sputum in 60 of the 64 cases in the trial, and pneumococci were cultured in 52 cases. The outcome in the two treatment groups was compared using the sequential analysis technique. No significant differences were observed in any of the parameters studied. It is concluded that daily treatment with procaine penicillin aluminium monostearate produces an adequate clinical response in the management of uncomplicated pneumococcal pneumonia.
