Alcoholism and heavy drinking are a grave public‐health problem throughout Australia, and are responsible for 3% of all deaths. A summary is given of the ways in which alcohol can kill, and attention is drawn to two little‐recognized, fairly common ways in which alcohol can cause sudden death. —. by cardiomyopathy, and by an interaction of relatively small doses of alcohol and psychotropic drugs.
