Analyses have been made of dietary records and answers to a questionnaire obtained from 80 Australian Olympic athletes. As expected, great variation was found in the average daily intake of calories. Nutrient intakes also varied tremendously, with some individuals taking below the suggested allowances for Australians. The study indicates that athletes should pay particular attention to the adequacy of their thiamine intake. Male athletes were divided into groups according to the amount of training undertaken. The three groups showed significant differences in their Intakes of some nutrients. Variations were found in the protein and carbohydrate content of the meal consumed before competition. Further study is needed to determine the significance of this meal.
