From Old Testament times, man has been concerned about pollution of land and, to some extent, of water. His more recent concern about contamination of water and air stem, naturally, from increasing use of fuel and chemicals and from exploitation of water catchment areas. Pollution as a nuisance is manifest to everyone at some time in the modern urban environment. Examples of pollution as a menace to health, to production and to property are outlined. The possibility of pollution reaching disaster proportions is discussed.
