In a survey comparing 600 trained women with 600 untrained women at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, results revealed that in the trained group, length of labour was less, less anæsthesia was necessary, and far fewer drugs were administered. The last two findings bear out results obtained in a survey conducted at the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital by Furler et alii (1964). It was also found that, in the trained group, more perineums remained intact (there were fewer tears), and the Apgar ratings of babies at birth were generally higher than those of the offspring of untrained women. The mental attitudes of each group were not assessed.
