One hundred and eighty‐one cases of acute breast abscess are reviewed, of which 175 were treated surgically. The supposed rationale for the early use of stilbœstrol and antibiotics in this condition is reviewed; neither appears to confer any benefit. Stilbosstrol carries potential dangers, and unnecessary antibiotic therapy is wasteful. A form of treatment of acute breast abscess is shown to be satisfactory; out‐patient management of this condition is advocated.
