After five years' limited experience with prostheses applied in the theatre immediately after amputation, the Indications are that, provided the surgeon is intimately concerned with the total treatment, the procedure has much to offer. The involvement of the procedure with osteoplastic and myoplastic techniques is discussed, with a description of the local approach. The results obtained with a group of amputees are described which suggest that continued investigation of the procedure Is warranted.
