The injury registers in three Repatriation General Hospitals have been analysed in order to determine the size and nature of the problem of strain injuries associated with manual handling in hospitals. Over the two‐year period reviewed, these injuries were by far the greatest contributor to time loss from accident, and handling, particularly lifting of patients, was by far the most commonly reported source of the injuries. Means of dealing with the problem are briefly outlined.
