In a series of 30 patients submitted to bowel resection before complications became clinically apparent there was no death and no significant postoperative complication. On the other hand, in a series of 35 patients with obvious complications, there were two deaths after bowel resection due to spread of the infection, and severe and prolonged disability in many of the others. In nine cases in which resection was not performed because of poor general condition or extensive local inflammation, three patients died after lesser operative procedures, and the other six received little relief from the disease. Thus, there were no deaths among the patients without apparent complications who were submitted to bowel resection; there were five deaths (11–4%) among the 44 patients in whom one or more complications had appeared before operation.
