Two hundred and thirty‐seven patients who had lower limb amputations have been reviewed. The clinical course to amputation, the level of the amputation, the complication rates of a particular amputation and the techniques of amputation have been studied and are discussed. The differences between diabetic and non‐diabetic patients with peripheral vascular disease are examined. The place of below‐knee amputation in the rehabilitation of a patient is considered, and a change in attitude to this procedure is noted.
