A case Is described in which precipitation of a water‐soluble contrast medium (“Gastrografin”) occurred In the gastric balloon of a Sengstaken‐Blakemore tube, preventing its withdrawal. A possible explanation of this precipitation is that gastric acid diffused into the contrast medium across the wall of the balloon. It is recommended that air be used to fill the gastric balloon.
