Upper airway obstruction due to acute inflammation in infants and children may be life‐threatening for the child. Except in rare instances the obstruction is due to acute laryngo‐tracheitis (“croup”) or to acute epiglottitis. The former is by far the commoner, but the latter the more dangerous and may cause death from suffocation within a few hours from the onset of symptoms.
