Eight deaths from myocardial infarction were found in 995 post‐mortem examinations performed in Papua–New Guinea from 1962 to 1968. Many of the factors which have at various times been considered important in producing this mode of death were operating to a minimal extent. The population is being exposed to rapid and profound economic and cultural change, and it may reasonably be expected that this will produce equally profound changes in the disease patterns. Studies of this natural experiment may help to elucidate some of the perplexing problems in the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction.
