Eleven Thomas shunts have been used in nine cases since September, 1969. The shunts have allowed good dialysis. Half the shunts have been complicated by either infection or hæmorrhage. Suggestions are made for reducing this complication rate. The use of the shunts is recommended for patients who will be treated by home dialysis. SUMMARY 1. Eleven Thomas shunts have been used in nine cases since September, 1969. 2. One shunt only thrombosed. 3. Half the shunts have been complicated by either hæmorrhage or infection. 4. Four shunts have required removal. 5. It is recommended that the shunts should be inserted four weeks before hæmodialysis is required. 6. The use of the shunts is recommended for home dialysis patients.
