A 33‐month survey of 37,674 in‐patient admissions to a children's hospital showed that there were 7,094 episodes of infection on admission and 1,067 hospital‐acquired episodes of infection. The range of infections implicated in hospital‐acquired disease was diverse, but particularly Important were bacteria whose habitat in man is the intestinal tract.
