The history of seat‐restraint systems as injury‐preventing devices is briefly reviewed, as are the benefits to be expected from their use. Practical and personal problems are cited which may prevent an increase in the relative number of seat‐belt wearers. The question of the imposition of a law to make wearing compulsory is discussed, and particular notice is taken of current legal and sociological issues.
