A survey of women concerned with limiting their family was carried out in the community in which I practise. It indicated that many women had insufficient knowledge of the subject. To remedy this lack of knowledge, there is a need for better communication between women and their advisers, either medical or clerical. There would also seem to be a need for family planning clinics, which could be associated with infant welfare centres to cater for those women who at present do not seek advice. The views of the women would indicate that conventional methods of birth control are not very satisfactory, and that deficiencies in these methods lead to health upsets and unwanted pregnancies. Until there is improvement in methods of birth control, this survey indicates that more attention should be given to sterilization as a reliable and pleasing means of limiting a family when this is desired.
