Immunological therapy has hitherto been limited to the administration of gamma globulin as a replacement measure in immunoglobulin deficiency and in the prevention or modification of certain infectious diseases. Recent advances in immunoglobulin chemistry have enabled the preparation of specific immunoglobulin solutions, some of which may be administered by the intravenous route. Replacement therapy of cellular immune deficiency diseases has been successfully achieved by lymphoid cell grafting in the last three years. With the application of routine laboratory methods for the quantitation of cellular as well as humoral immune competence, the gap between diagnosis and specific therapy is progressively diminishing.
