The significance of the relation between the long‐acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) and thyrotoxicosis is examined in the light of recent work. The relationship has been found to resemble that of other autoantibodies and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, pernicious anæmia and Hashimoto's disease. Non‐specific stress is an important factor in precipitating the condition. There are many features of thyrotoxicosis that fit the autoimmune model. Further advances in understanding depend on more precise definition of the relation between autoimmunity and disease.
