The value of maintenance dialysis and renal transplantation in the treatment of chronic renal failure is now widely accepted. However, the outcome of these procedures for the individual patient is uncertain, and they can make a considerable impact on the patient's family and financial structure before rehabilitation is completed. It is suggested that some patients may need specific financial assistance over the period of their illness. Furthermore, the cost of such therapy emphasizes the need for preventive measures in the management of this disease.
