This paper endeavours to describe only the military operations and to discuss briefly the implications of the rapid and mass commitment of men and supplies in such civil emergencies. In doing so, attention is drawn to the immense resources required for successful epidemic control in an underdeveloped country and the requirement in such countries for an epidemic control organization with the necessary statutory authority to conduct, control and coordinate all available resources in time of emergency. During the operation, 146,000 people were medically contacted, and some 50,000 penicillin “Syrettes” used together with considerable amounts of vaccine. The operation appeared to be successful in all aspects.
