This is a review of hearing tests carried out in a hospital audiology clinic on a heterogeneous group of children up to the age of five and a half years. It was found that the optimal time for testing these children was during the drowsy state, and that testing at such time yielded results which otherwise might have been difficult or impossible to obtain. Previous work on this subject is discussed, and consideration is given to the theoretical basis for these findings. Because the technique is simple and requires no elaborate equipment, it could be carried out in any medical clinic or by parents at home.
