“Florinal” (a formulation of aspirin, phenacetin, caffeine and isobutyiallylbarbituric acid) was compared with a second formulation, “FIPA”, in which paracetamol had been substituted for phenacetin. The newer formulation appears to be of equal efficacy to the older formulation. Both preparations were effective analgesic agents when tested under the conditions of a double‐blind cross‐over trial on patients with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis of the hands, and no side effects were encountered.
