Over a 12‐year period (1958–1969), 19 patients were treated at Sydney Hospital for chronic Crohn's disease; of these, all except two underwent surgical treatment. The commonest operative procedure was resection of the diseased segment; half this group required a further operation, but the end results of surgery were considered very satisfactory. Six patients were noted to be suffering from acute Crohn's disease during this period. This variety subsided without any active treatment and did not progress to the chronic form of the disease.
