In the two‐year period 1967–1968, 171 patients with “cardiac arrest” occurring outside the operating theatre and related areas were treated by an emergency cardio‐respiratory resuscitation service In the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Twenty‐seven, or 16%, of these patients recovered completely to leave hospital, intact neurologically. The basic features of the resuscitation service are detailed, together with suggestions for improvement of such services. Comment is offered on situations In which resuscitation would seem to be unjustifiable.
