The formal constitution of the Australian Society of Occupational Medicine is an appropriate occasion on which to consider the needs for occupational medicine in Australia for the 1970's. The ideas that will be (put forward are not new (Smith, 1969). They should be restated, because there is at present little recognition of the needs for education in occupational medicine and for occupational health services in this country.
