A prospective study is presented of maternal urinary œstriol excretion in 67 twin pregnancies and one triplet pregnancy studied in the third trimester of pregnancy. The pattern of œstriol excretion was similar in the normal and the hypertensive twin pregnancies, although a decline in excretion was observed late in the third trimester in the hypertensive group. The œstriol excretion in normal twin pregnancies was higher than in singleton pregnancies, but this was not statistically significant. There were six pregnancies in which there was a perinatal death. These have been individually reported in relation to œstriol excretion values. There was a positive correlation between the combined foetal weights and the maximum œstriol excretion in both normal and hypertensive twin groups. However, a good correlation between the combined placental weight and the maximum œstriol excretion was observed only In the normal twin pregnancies. The significance of and possible explanations for the results obtained In this study are briefly discussed.
