A study was made of 331 psychiatric consultations occurring over a 12‐month period in the medical and surgical wards of a general teaching hospital. The sample was examined with regard to the reason for psychiatric referral of the patient, psychiatric diagnosis and the consultant's management. Implications of some of the findings are discussed, as well as the role of a psychiatric consultation service in the setting of a general hospital.
