The cases of 50 patients having a lacerated liver managed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital are reviewed. Road accidents were responsible for the Injury in 30 cases. The over‐all mortality was 22%, and this figure has not altered in the past 10 years. The right anterior segment and the anterior diaphragmatic surface of the liver were the sectors most frequently lacerated. A simple oversew was the most common procedure adopted. The mortality is high, and haemorrhage and infection are the principal postoperative sequelae.
