REVASCULARIZATION of the myocardium by Internal mammary artery Implantation was suggested by A. M. Vineberg In 1946. Interest in this procedure was revived by the development of coronary art.erlography by Mason Sones of the Cleveland ClInic. The present experimental and clinJcal study was designed to demonstrate that widespread revascularlzatlon results trom the implantation of long segments of both Internal mammary arteries In subjects with triple coronary artery constriction. The technique can be applied to critically ill patients with anticipated Improvement in the majority. New anast.omotic channels between the Implanted arteries and the diseased coronary arteries were demonstrated by postoperative selective Internal mammary artery cineangiography. The additional amount. of postoperative myocardial blood flow Is significant. and correlates With the Improvement in the patient's condition. When 15 patients were studied three to flve months postoperatively, 28 of the 30 implant.ed Internal mammary arteries were shown to be patent.
