A survey of 200 mothers delivered at the Queen Victoria Hospital was carried out to determine the number of women who might be considered at risk of becoming pregnant before marriage. One hundred and forty‐two (71%) admitted to premarital coitus and only 11 had used effective contraception, thus one hundred and thirty‐one (65%) were “at risk” of premarital conception. The significance of these findings is discussed and some recommendations are made to avoid the sequelæ of this behaviour.
