Nine patients with cardiogenic shock were treated with phenoxybenzamine, given intravenously, and three of these patients survived. It is suggested that cases of cardiogenic shock are a heterogeneous group, and that in a proportion of cases the hæemodynamic situation may be deleteriously affected by an inappropriate response to circulating catecholamines. This group of patients would benefit from treatment with phenoxybenzamine or other adrenergic blocking agents. However, further investigation will be necessary to define this group more accurately.
