Twenty cases are reported in which an abnormal number of stomatocytes was present in the peripheral blood. In five of these, this abnormality was a chance finding in other well‐established disease states. In the remaining 15 cases, all the patients being of Mediterranean origin, stomatocytosis formed part of an apparent distinct syndrome. Recurrent abdominal pain, splenomegaly and anæmia were the striking features. The presence of significant hæmolytic disease was confirmed by red‐cell survival studies in many instances. However, no abnormality of red‐cell metabolism or of hæmoglobin could be demonstrated by routine methods.
