Eighteen patients with confluent apical and sub‐apical lesions were submitted to blind aspiration needle biopsy to determine the usefulness of this method as a routine investigation. The results appeared to confirm its safety to the patient. Whilst there was a reasonable accuracy in obtaining diagnostic material from those with carcinoma, this was not so for those with inflammatory disease. Benefit to the cancerous patients from “early” as opposed to “late” diagnosis is discussed and an opinion ventured that such terms became meaningless as an aid to prognosis.
