We report a case of profound leukopenia following l‐asparaginase treatment in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukæmia. I‐Asparaginase raises a new concept in cancer chemotherapy, in that it removes an essential nutrient from sensitive malignant cells. It has been said to have no inherent toxicity for normal cells, but in this case appeared to depress the normal cellular elements of the bone marrow. Cellular sensitivity to the enzyme appears to be variable, and in‐vitro sensitivity tests should prove of value in the control of treatment.
