A longitudinal investigation has been conducted into the dental condition and treatment requirements of adolescents in South Australia. At all schools, it was found that the mean number of teeth which had been filled was far less than the number requiring treatment. Many permanent teeth were in danger of being lost. The high rate of dental disease could be related, in part, to socio‐economic factors. Support for more research is required.
