A comparison of an acridan derivative (Smith Kline and French 14336) and trifluoperazine in the treatment of chronic schizophrenia was carried out over a period of 28 weeks, using 27 pairs of hospitalized male patients matched for age, duration of illness and total morbidity. Assessment was made by means of the Nurses’ Observation Scale for Inpatient Evaluation (NOSIE 30), a Brief Pschiatric Rating Scale and global evaluation. The findings suggest that, at the dosage levels employed, SKF 14336 was neither superior nor inferior to trifluoperazine in controlling behaviour or reducing psychopathology. Side effects were similar, except that in the group receiving SKF 14336 a polymorphous light eruption occurred in 10 of the 27 cases.
